If you hadn’t known, the renowned mythological city of Atlantis was found by Google Maps back in 2009. Mind you, Google was adamant the image was just a result of a sensor glitch, and if the infamous city were really located at that point, some of the dimensions would have been impractical.

Still, despite Google’s truthful admissions, Atlantis hunters from around the globe threw up their hands and rejoiced that someone had finally proven their lives were not wasted on chasing a place from fiction.

After all, the esteemed Plato, who wrote about Atlantis as a historical account handed down to him by another ancient culture, only wrote supposed truths about science, mathematics, and philosophy. Plato was never known to be a lover of fiction; however, it does need to be stated that the scholar did not see Atlantis for himself, only documented it from a verbal telling of history.

For some reason, throughout the centuries, the mysteries surrounding the myth of Atlantis have kept people enthralled. The possibility of an advanced civilization sinking beneath the waves from a demise it perpetuated on itself is something that makes most people nod their heads in deep thought. The story of Atlantis served as a cautionary tale against arrogance, and showed that true giants rarely recover from such falls.

It, too, is a compelling tale of snobbery gone wrong.

What is really going on in the search for Atlantis is that the story, because it is portrayed to be historical, appeals to the treasure hunter in all of us. If such a great civilization existed, the wonders that might be discovered could change how we view modern man. But wait—that in and of itself begs the question of: have we really changed that much? If we are not as advanced as the civilization of Atlantis was, why should we presume that we would handle such technology better than those who came before us?
Has mankind changed so much over the ages? The answer to that should be obvious to anyone who reads the news. The world is full of corruption. It seeps down from the highest levels of government through the classes and into the depths of the world that no longer abide by common law. If Atlantis exists, to find it would mean almost certain destruction to our current progression.
None of this really matters of course; the new update to Google Maps has remedied the mistake that caused the Atlantis glitch back in 2009. Treasure hunters will no longer be able to find the questionable grid on the sea floor because it was never there to begin with. The sudden disappearance of the image will no doubt spark a slew of conspiracy theories, because, as we all know, the government wants Atlantis for itself.
