Stick to E46s from 2003-2006 to avoid engine issues, and expect to pay in the mid-$20,000s. “The design gets less boxy after 2005 and also comes with different engine sizes—from the 3.5L to the powerful 6.3L. A S500/550 for about $40,000 isn’t bad for a car that sold new for $90,000.”



“A brand-new Z06 is too expensive for most aspiring racers, but the bang for your buck is unmatchable, the potential upgrades are endless, and it’s easy to find aftermarket support to add more horsepower,” says Tse. Not that you’ll need to add much—the 2002-04 first-generation models had 405 horsepower. “It’s a great track car, for sure, but these things can get 30 MPG on the highway,” says Tse, “and the unmolested ones will be collector cars.” Pay around $25,000.


“Refined, strong technology, reliability, and great cost of ownership,” says Tsuchiya. The LS460 came out in 2007 at $60,000 new, but you can find them in the low-$4,000 range. Or you can pay $10-20,000 for the prior generations, the LS400 and LS430.
